High performance solutions for polymers, coatings and inks:
Cognis UK is the world leading producer of (meth)acrylic hydroxy monomers. These reactive intermediates are sold globally and are used primarily in high performance automotive paints, high-gloss lacquers and in industrial finish applications.

Cognis UK also manufactures a range of high purity products for contact lens and biomedical applications. Cognis UK further reacts hydroxy monomers to give a range of speciality adduct monomers. These are primarily used in flexographic printing plates, UV cure coatings and the manufacture of printed circuit boards. Cognis UK has developed its own technology for manufacturing a range of multifunctional methacrylate monomers (MFMs). Cognis UK MFMs are used in many niche applications such as adhesives, rubber compounds and a variety of polymer composites. These speciality monomers are supplied under the well known Bisomer trade name.

High performance solutions for synthetic lubricants:

Cognis UK is a leading European manufacturer of base-fluids and formulated polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) developed for speciality lubrication and foam control applications. Our wide range of PAGs are prepared primarily by reacting ethylene oxide and propylene oxide with selective initiator molecules, most typically alcohols. The plant at Hythe has been extended over the last 5 years to increase manufacturing capacity.

Furthermore, there has recently been the introduction of “capping” technology which allows replacement of the PAG polymer’s terminating hydroxyl group(s) with alkoxy groups. This offers particular advantages for products which have application as reactive intermediates for silicone polyethers and also lubricating oils for applications such as refrigeration.

Growth has been steady and intensive product development continues to upgrade the product portfolio with speciality fluids to service developing markets such as wind turbine lubrication and environmentally acceptable refrigeration systems.

PAGs are a very versatile series of mainly liquid polymers. Cognis UK manufactures both water soluble and water insoluble grades with a wide range of applications, predominantly
for industrial lubrication systems. This includes fire  resistant hydraulic fluids, gear and compressor lubricants, and various process fluids such as foam control agents.  Products are sold under the highly successful Breox trade name.
