Cognis at In-Cosmetics 2008 – it’s a “green” and beautiful life
At this year’s In-Cosmetics trade show, Cognis Care Chemicals and its active ingredients business Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS) exhibited a number of products designed to appeal to today’s environmentally conscious consumers. Their natural-sourced personal care solutions enable manufacturers to develop high-performance end products that allow users to look and feel good, and be environmentally responsible at the same time.
Cognis also presented Euperlan® Green, the first “green”, ethylene oxid and amine free pearlizing wax dispersion. This novel, exceptionally mild and unique pearlizer is intended for use in appealing hair and body cleansing formulations that fit the trend towards natural, sustainable beauty products. Euperlan Green represents a possibility to manufacture products which are not only “green” but also have a pleasing appearance. It is supplied as an easy-to-handle liquid. Because it is cold-processable, manufacturing processes that use it are both quicker and more energy-efficient.
One of the innovative products featured at the show was Plantacare® 1200 GLY. This “green” surfactant for oral care applications such as toothpaste combines sustainability, mildness and improved taste. Plantacare 1200 GLY is the latest addition to Cognis’ range of environmentally sound and highly effective APG surfactants made from renewable resources.
High-performance beauty ingredients
Another Cognis product exhibited at the show was Rheocare™ TTA, a liquid acrylic emulsion polymer for surfactant-based cleansing formulations. This easily dispersible rheology modifier has a unique thickening and stabilization profile, and is specifically designed to enhance the appearance of cosmetic cleansing preparations. These special rheological properties enable it to stabilize air bubbles, peeling particles and encapsulated actives in body cleansing formulations.
Sun care products must feel pleasant on the skin and have good water resistance – properties that are delivered by the Cosmedia® Gel CC texture agent. It improves the thermostability and water resistance of sun care emulsions, resulting in a very even film on the skin. Because of the organo-clay platelets it contains, formulations are less sticky. As a result, they are easy to apply, and deliver a pleasant melting texture with a light, silky feel on the skin.
Also showcased at the Cognis booth was the Primacare® range of innovative delivery systems for high-end cosmetics, which includes microcapsules, nanocapsules and visual beads. Primasphere microcapsules steadily release their contents over an extended period of time, making them a good choice for stabilizing actives like Retinol and Vitamin E. The Primasys and Lipocutin nanocapsules enhance the penetration of the actives they contain, and as such are suitable for Vitamin C derivatives, ginkgo extract and the like. And the Primasponge visual beads are offered in a variety of different sizes and attractive colors; two examples of the way they let formulators add visual appeal and exciting sensory experiences to their products are Peeling Primasponge and new Pearl Primasponge.
Innovative solutions for all ages
These days, beauty is not just something for the young. Many older women still have active lifestyles – they feel young, and want to look that way too. This is the idea behind Cognis and LS’s “Ageless Beauty” concept – a carefully assembled selection of cosmetic and personal care products with ingredients to fit the physiological and emotional demands of women of all different ages. In this way, they can help women show off particular features to best effect, and make them feel positive about themselves and their age at any time.
Children and teenagers in particular often find personal hygiene something of a chore. However, Cognis’ new “Crazy textures” range of innovative body cleansing products is set to change all that, and turn cleansing into a pleasurable experience. The extra-mild “Shower Shot” was specially developed for children’s sensitive and delicate skin, while the unusual scents and sensory experiences offered by “Chocolate Sensation Foam,” or the cooling foam of “Super Foaming Shower Jelly”, add some fun to baths and showers.
IMAG-IN(E) a silent world
Cognis and LS presented their IMAG-IN(E) concept at this year’s In-focus area. ImagIn(e) is all about creating an utopian world. Beyond words, emotions would be expressed by applying cosmetics on skin and hair, the extremely sensitive interface between inner feelings and the surrounding environment, opening the way to true but silent communication. This manner of communicating would bring a new dimension to the way in which people interact and relate to each other. IMAG-IN(E) focuses on six emotions: bliss, anger, peace, pride, sadness and love. At the In-focus area, Cognis and LS invited people to rediscover how it feels to communicate without using words – but through the help of cosmetics instead.
Dr. Anke Fleuth, Global Marketing Hair Body Oral, explains: “For this year’s In-Focus theme Utopia, we have imagined an idealistic world, in which people would be able to completely accept, embrace and show who they genuinely are by expressing how they feel using their skin and hair – the very sensitive interface between their inner feelings and their surroundings.”
Presenting “green” factors for success
As part of the Cosmetic Science Conference, Dr. Iris Hütter, Marketing Manager Hair Body Oral, gave a presentation entitled “Green Chemical Solutions – New ‘Green’ Raw Material Concepts as Key to Success for Consumer Brands”. She discussed the challenges involved in developing “green” ingredients and formulations for different market segments. The various considerations that apply to leave-on and rinse-off products were explained, always with one eye on the key priority – balancing naturalness with performance. Examples from the rinse-off segment showed how formulators have successfully overcome this challenge.
Comments Bettina Jackwerth, Global Marketing Director Skin Care of Cognis Care Chemicals: “We are committed to helping manufacturers develop products that serve the global wellness and sustainability trends. Our Green Chemical Solutions classification system and our high-performance innovations enable customers in the cosmetic industry to meet consumers’ increasingly demanding expectations of natural-source personal care products.”
