Performance boosters for additives

The demands placed upon today’s lubricants and fuels are increasingly stringent. In order to meet these demands, the lubricant and fuel industry have come to rely upon high technology and high reliability additive systems. These additives are supplied by high technology highly skilled additive companies. Cognis does not act as an additive company; however we do supply speciality chemicals to additive companies for use within their technology.

Driving to extremes – Additive components
The broad range of Cognis technologies are sold as components to the expert additive companies as part of the benefits delivered to fuel and motor oil, such as minimized wear, a cleaning effect on the engine valves, corrosion protection, low temperature operability, and reduced emissions.

Solubilization
To ensure that the valves in a gasoline engine always remain clean and work perfectly, a cleaning substance is added to fuels. But most of these detergents require a carrier fluid if they are to perform optimally. Cognis’ effective carrier fluid technology enables new marketing claims, such as “the clean-up gasoline.”

Corrosion protection
Fuels contain water and are constantly in contact with metals. In the refinery, during transportation, in storage, or in the tank. To prevent corrosion, Cognis offers effective protection with its dimer acids, for applications in the refinery, and as part of the additive package for use in finished fuels. Even a minimal concentration as part of the additive formulation reliably minimizes corrosion risk. A protective coating is formed on the metal, displacing water from the surface and thus preventing chemical corrosion reactions. In addition to its powerful performance, our corrosion protection is also exemplary in its adherence to environmental guidelines concerning the reduction of the sulphur content in fuels and additives.

Wax control in middle distillate fuels
Refiners process crude oil into a number of valuable fractions according to distillation temperature. These range from gasoline, kerosene and middle distillates right down to heavy residual or bunker fuels. When a middle distillate fuel is cooled down, waxes manifest themselves first as cloudiness, which becomes more pronounced as the fuel is cooled further. This phenomenon can have detrimental effects on vehicle and fuel pump operability. Cognis supports the market by providing the necessary high performance wax control components.

Lubricity improver
For sound environmental reasons, the world is moving in the direction of fuels with reduced sulphur content. For diesel fuel, some of the natural lubricty in the fuel is lost as sulphur is removed from the fuel. Cognis makes chemistry which replaces this natural lubricity…keeping the wheels of industry moving with high technology components for our additive company customers.
